If you've been putting off your Defensive Driving Course, this is a good time to get it done while the current system is still in place.

Our September Defensive Driving Course May Be Our Last

Big changes are coming to New Zealand's driver licensing system in January 2027, and they could mean that our September AA Defensive Driving Course is our last.

At the moment, completing an approved Defensive Driving Course can reduce the restricted-licence period for drivers under 25 from 18 months to 12 months - potentially getting you to your full licence six months sooner.

From 25 January 2027, that six-month reduction will no longer apply.

While the course is extremely valuable to learn to be a safer driver, for many young drivers, the reduction in time on your restricted licence is often the main reason for doing the course. Without the licence-time reduction incentive, we simply don't know yet what demand will look like for a future course.

New driver training arrangements are being developed, but the details of the replacement courses - including what they will involve and what benefit they will provide - are not yet clear.

So, for now, this could be your last opportunity to complete the current AA Defensive Driving Course in Thames with us and take advantage of the six-month reduction in the restricted-licence period.
